Week 6 - End Note

Lecture

This week was all about Endnote, a helpful program for referencing our assessments. The program was defined as a databse that can be used as a reference manager or a bibliography make. Also discussed was the 2 ways that Endnote could be used, as a standalone program or being used through MS Word "cite as you write".
We were taught how it works what it does and the different applications with the program.
Justine also gave us a demonstration on how End Note worked.

Workshop

We were given a few references to put into end note and create our own library.

I had to open a new reference and plug in all the details about the reference eg. Author, year of publish, pages etc.In doing this Endnote automatically references the information in the style and source you choose. The hardest part about this was that i wasn't sure about what kind of source it was, but I guess the main purpose of this workshop was to just introduce us to Endnote and how to use it.

Week 5 - Information Management

Lecture

The main purpose of this lecture was to help us understand the different information formats and their pros and cons of them. In doing so, developing how to organise our information in a way that is suitable for us.

The two formats that were discussed were bit and and atom based formats.

Bit format being electronical and atom based being a hard copy.

Bit formating was the main focus, as the lecture discussed tips and hint on how to organise our computer files and desktops. For example creating folders and directories and the recommended amount of files in a folder (20).

Workshop

Create three folder under favourites on explorer and put two websites in each

I chose to do music, sport and videos as those are the types of sites I usually visit.

Being Digital

This article discusses the experiences and views of atoms and bit in the world today in the eyes of Negroponte. It covers the advantages and disadvantages of both information formats.

Bit Based

This article discusses bit based as a format that is developing and progressing with time.
The progression of bit based information is something that people find fascinating and new as with all trends the development of this format will become very familiar in homes across the world. As technology advances, bit based information is becoming easier and easier to access. The main advantage of this is that information can be quickly accessed without much fuss. The disadvantage is that information is easily stolen and can easily be placed in the wrong hands.

Atom Based

This article discusses atom based information as something that will be around for a long time. For example, the article mentions things like Chinese food or sweaters not being able to be transmitted through in bit based form. This is an advantage, because if bit based transactions don’t work, atom based transactions are always there as a good back up. The disadvantage is that it is becoming less reliable, as Negroponte discusses his packages being stuck in customs were as shipping bits through the net, there was no problem.

Even though bit based information becomes more and more familiar with society, atom based information will still be something that we will have to encounter until technology advances beyond belief and atom based information is redundant in society.

Readings

Tutorial on Using Bookmarks and Favourite

This reading gives a basic tutorial on how to create a blog. It gives you a website to ad that then intructs you on how to organise it for efficient and easy access.

Information Management & Electronic Environments - Dr Jim Mullaney

This reading discusses how as un undergraduat to utilise the resources we are given wisely. For example it discusses how endnote can be a useful tool and in addition to see which information we get of the internet is appropriate for our use.

Week 4 - Communications

Lecture

This weeks lecture discussed communication technology.

This covered the 4 types of communication, synchronous, asynchronous and "Place"dependent and independent.

Synchronous being that people have to be interacting at the same time instantly like a phone call.

Asynchronous being when those communicating take their own time in responding, such as
email or writing letters.

It also discussed the different uses of ICT, such as e-mail clients like MS Outlook, Instant messangers such as MSN Messanger and bulletin boards.

Workshop

In the worskshop we had to look up a bulletin board on google regarding a topic that we were interested in. Having just had dlunch at Nando's i typed in Nando's chicken.
I found this interesting as you can learn about different opinions about topics and can potentially develop a better understanding the topic you are interested in, it is also a good place for discussion and debate.

In addition we had to view a podcast.
Here's a site with multiple podcasts from Hamish and Andy on 92.9
