The main purpose of this lecture was to help us understand the different information formats and their pros and cons of them. In doing so, developing how to organise our information in a way that is suitable for us.
The two formats that were discussed were bit and and atom based formats.
Bit format being electronical and atom based being a hard copy.
Bit formating was the main focus, as the lecture discussed tips and hint on how to organise our computer files and desktops. For example creating folders and directories and the recommended amount of files in a folder (20).
Workshop
Create three folder under favourites on explorer and put two websites in each
I chose to do music, sport and videos as those are the types of sites I usually visit.
Being Digital
This article discusses the experiences and views of atoms and bit in the world today in the eyes of Negroponte. It covers the advantages and disadvantages of both information formats.
Bit Based
This article discusses bit based as a format that is developing and progressing with time.
The progression of bit based information is something that people find fascinating and new as with all trends the development of this format will become very familiar in homes across the world. As technology advances, bit based information is becoming easier and easier to access. The main advantage of this is that information can be quickly accessed without much fuss. The disadvantage is that information is easily stolen and can easily be placed in the wrong hands.
Atom Based
This article discusses atom based information as something that will be around for a long time. For example, the article mentions things like Chinese food or sweaters not being able to be transmitted through in bit based form. This is an advantage, because if bit based transactions don’t work, atom based transactions are always there as a good back up. The disadvantage is that it is becoming less reliable, as Negroponte discusses his packages being stuck in customs were as shipping bits through the net, there was no problem.
Even though bit based information becomes more and more familiar with society, atom based information will still be something that we will have to encounter until technology advances beyond belief and atom based information is redundant in society.
