Week 1 - Using Computers

Lecture

The first lecture of the semester was to introduce us to the course. This included what was expected of us, what the unit would provide us as undergraduates and what computing skills need to be developed through out the semester.

The lecture discussed that this course was to familiarize ourselves with information and communication technologies so that our use of resources will be broader when completing any assessment.

In addition the course structure, including the six modules to be covered throughout the semester was included. As well as the assessments that we are expected to complete and the responsibilities that we have as students, such as attending classes and knowing the plagiarism policy of ECU.

Workshop

We essentially looked at the ECU website and how we can use the facilities there for our advantage for university study eg. SIMO and Blackboard. I found this as something that I would
use in the future to make make study more efficient.

Secondly we started our first assessment, creating a blog. First creating a Blogger account
and then image host account on somewhere such as PhotoBucket or Imageshack.

We also had to produce a screen shot, here is one I took of the ECU website.

Readings

Welcome to PC Lube and Tune

This website includes various articles and websites covering topics about the internet, PC and Mac
applications and programs, hardware, issues with computer technology and tutorial websites.

This website can be useful for the curious types, who are interested into learning and discovering in depth
the concept behind computers and computer technology, as it really goes into a lot of detail in various aspects of
information technology. For example it talks about the hardware in computers, defining each and every aspect as well as discussing programs such as Java and issues with the program.

Howstuffworks "How PC's Work"

This site is very much like the first link from
PC Lube and Tune, as it discusses the hardware in PC's.
However this site takes a step back and describes computers in simpler terms for those who don't understand
the computer jargon. This site also talks about the future of PC's and how it will come of easier access in the future.
